Retirement, Estate, Charitable and Succession Planning

So, what are we saving and investing money for?  What is the goal, what is the end-game?

Some would argue that life is a game, the rules of which are set forth in the statement, “He who dies with the most stuff, wins.”  Is that the philosophy that we should have?  Is that Biblical?  Is that worthy of a follower of Christ?

Is Retirement the goal of the believer?  Should it be?  Am I working hard now so at some point I won’t have to work?  Or am I working and preparing for a time when I might not be able to work?  These are two very different approaches to work life and retirement.

If I decide to retire, what am I going to do then?  Is retiring simply not working, or will I simply be working at different things?

A bumper sticker often found on an RV reads “I’m spending my children’s inheritance”.  When a client has been successful in saving and investing, has worked hard for many years, that client is faced with some very serious questions about what to do with the money that has been accumulated.  What does the Bible say about:

  • Spending your children’s inheritance
  • Retirement
  • Passing along a financial legacy to children
  • Passing along non-financial legacy to children
  • Using accumulated wealth to fund the Kingdom of God
